Original floorboards are the other constraint, and they are everywhere in this part of Sydney. Boards with gaps let moisture through to the joists and to whatever is below, and old timber feet on a sofa will mark a board if they are left standing damp on it. We put barrier under every foot before extraction starts, keep the moisture in the fabric rather than around it, and lift the piece off the floor where the frame allows. It also changes when we book. Damp-room jobs go early in the day so there are hours of daylight and airflow afterwards, not at four in the afternoon. If a room has active damp — rising damp in a cottage, a wall that is visibly wet, no way to move air through at all — we will say that a full hot water extraction is the wrong call that week and offer a low-moisture clean instead, which lifts less soil but will not leave you with a damp couch in a damp room. Occasionally the right advice is to wait for better weather, and we give it.
Pet ownership here is high and the housing is small, which means the dog is on the couch. Surface deposits, hair worked down into the seams and the smell that comes with both are all normal work and all treatable. Two other things we will not pretend to fix. Fabric that has spent years in front of a north or west window is sun-degraded — the colour has gone and the fibre tears under extraction rather than cleaning up. And a couch whose foam has collapsed and whose arms are worn through to the weave is at the end of its life; a clean makes it a cleaner worn-out couch.
