Western Sydney curtains hang in houses that stay shut for most of summer. From Auburn and Lidcombe out to Marsden Park, Oran Park and Leppington the pattern repeats: air conditioning running for months, windows closed, and fine dust from half-built streets circulating through the same rooms. The dominant house type out here is detached brick on a standard block, and it gets sealed up around November and largely stays that way. The second factor is specific to this half of Sydney: estate construction. Marsden Park, Box Hill, Oran Park and Leppington are still being released lot by lot, and a house backing onto an active civil site takes in a pale, fine dust that behaves nothing like household lint. It does not brush off a hanging panel. It settles into the weave and it keeps arriving for as long as the street is being built out, which in a large estate is measured in years. Where the house also has someone coming home in workwear from Wetherill Park, Erskine Park or Silverwater, the garage door spends a lot of time open and the ducted return distributes whatever comes in with them.
A window in a post-2018 estate house is not the same object as a window in a 1970s brick veneer in Merrylands or Guildford. Ceilings in the newer stock run 2.7 to 3.0 metres, living rooms open onto stacker doors four to six metres wide, and the panel covering that opening is long, heavy and awkward. Double tracks are close to standard in the newer estates: a sheer in front for daytime privacy, a blockout behind it. That is two panels on one opening, and it is the most common reason a quote comes back above what someone had in mind. We say so before we start rather than on the invoice. Housing closer in — Auburn, Lidcombe, Granville, Merrylands — is more often a single track with a lined drape, plus roman blinds from $35 a blind through the kitchen and bedrooms. Distance shapes the booking as much as the fabric does. The region runs from Silverwater to Penrith and it is not sensible to cross it twice in a day, so we schedule by corridor — Blacktown, Doonside and Rooty Hill in one morning, Liverpool and Prestons in another. An outer address may be offered a particular day rather than any day of the week. The trade-off works in your favour on site: nearly every house here has a driveway and off-street parking, so equipment comes in from the van at the door instead of through a dock and a lift booking, and setup is a fraction of what the same job costs in the city.
Every fabric gets a colour-fast test on a hidden fold before anything wet touches the visible face. Face, reverse and lining are dry-vacuumed first to lift the estate dust, marks and odour are treated individually, then both faces are steamed while the panel hangs. Sheers are dry in about an hour; lined blockouts take closer to two. You can stay in the house while we work — there is nothing to dismantle and no rehanging to wait for.
Hardware is part of the job, not an add-on. Tracks, cording, brackets, pelmet tops and the head channel above a stacker door collect a gritty film out here that transfers straight back onto clean fabric if it is left, so all of it gets wiped out before we finish. Drying is where we ask for one thing: leave the air conditioning running on a moderate setting rather than opening the windows. Opening up onto a street with a slab pour happening two doors down draws fresh dust into damp fabric, which undoes the morning.
Sun-damaged fabric is the honest no. Years of western afternoon exposure makes a curtain brittle before it makes it dirty, and steam will finish a panel that is already splitting along a fold. We check for that at inspection and tell you on the spot. Fade is the same story: the pale band down a leading edge is dye loss, not soil, and no amount of cleaning brings the colour back. If a set is at that point we would rather say replace it than take the money and hand back a curtain that looks the same.
Two other cases come up regularly. Builder-grade sheers included in a house package are thin polyester, and on a large window count it can genuinely be cheaper to replace them than to clean the set twice. And a blockout whose acrylic backing has gone chalky and started flaking cannot be restored — cleaning removes loose coating, it does not put it back. We also cannot fix water staining coming from a leaking stacker door track, or a smoke odour that has gone into the plasterboard rather than the fabric. Where the problem is not in the curtain, cleaning the curtain is the wrong spend.

There is no separate travel line on the quote. What distance does affect is the day: we run the region in corridors rather than criss-crossing it, so an outer-west address is usually offered a specific day when a crew is already working that way. Book alongside a neighbour or a family member in the same estate and both jobs go into the one visit, which is where the real saving is.

It is worth knowing before you count windows, because a four-bedroom estate home with double tracks throughout has roughly twice the panel count an older single-track house of the same size does. We confirm the number on site before starting.
You can, and the curtains will come up clean, but be realistic about how long it lasts. While there are slabs being poured and roads being cut in the same street, fine dust keeps arriving and a sheer will look dull again sooner than it would in an established suburb. If the neighbouring lots are close to lock-up, waiting a few months is the better spend. If the house is going on the market or you have people coming, clean it now and accept the shorter interval.
No. Fading is dye loss caused by ultraviolet light, and cleaning has no effect on it — the pale stripe down a leading edge will still be there afterwards. Worse, fabric that has had years of afternoon sun is often weakened at the folds and can split under steam. We test for that before we quote and will tell you plainly if a set has reached the point where replacement is the sensible option.

We ask you not to open up during drying because in most parts of the region that pulls construction dust or dry paddock dust straight into damp fabric.
